In this hands-on workshop you will create a piece of ceramic furniture. Learn Austin’s coil and slab-building techniques with an emphasis on moisture control and proper attachment styles. Austin will instruct on where, when, and how to add internal supports for optimal weight distribution for each piece of furniture. You will learn how to enclose forms, construct shrink slabs, properly slow dry each chair, and how to move and fire finished works. The course is intended for those who wish to improve their practice. It is recommended to have a certain level and notions in English. SCHEDULE - 10am-17pm with 1 hour lunch break DAY 1 Presentations, Austin’s work slide introduction Slab shrinkage & interior structure presentation Students bring drawings/ images, furniture ideas. The furniture to construct should not exceed 2 feet in height Students sketch 5- 7 designs, Austin will talk about what tables will be the most successful for first time table makers. Conversation about the purpose of the workshop and the learning process Miniatures/Maquettes: spend one hour quickly sculpting 2 or 3 of the sketched designs Start of furniture: base slabs and coil building. Proper building methods and on how each table should be built. The best way to roll and compress slabs to prevent warping, sinking, and cracking. The best way to roll coils and how to attach them for optimal strength and to maximize time efficiency. DAY 2 This day is the main building day. Instruction on internal supports and ensure that all tables have the proper supports in the appropriate places. Coil compression and building. Instruction on how to close the table, and how to flip over a table. Refine maquettes if students would like to keep them. DAY 3 Refine tables, close up any openings Flip tables when ready Instruction on smoothing and or surface texture Drying process, talk about how to successfully dry a piece and prepare pieces for drying Firing schedules Surface finish options for large furniture Firing, clay (in case you want to bring the greenware with you) and glazing is not included in the price of the workshop, but can be purchased.
